My Pinball Machines
Revenge from Mars

Machine History

I purchased my Revenge from Mars from Chip Ware in Grand Rapids. I wasn’t planning on buying it I actually went to buy a Theater of Magic from him. When I got to his house I took a look at the TOM and the boards were hacked to death and a lot of things weren’t working. I don’t mind fixing problems but if some hack was in trying to fix them they usually do way more damage than good. Anyway, Chip suggested I try the RFM. I couldn’t believe how cool it was. Most people on rec.games.pinball had done nothing but slam the machine and I was very surprised at how much fun it was.

I took the machine home and played it to try and find any problems. I ended up replacing all of the micro switches because they were all flaky. I later read that Williams had problems with micro switches while these machines were being run. Shopping that machine is a dream, they whole playfield can easily be removed in 5 minutes. I took the topside completely apart and cleaned everything. I installed a NOS plastic set and a NOS metal ramp flap. I flame polished the ramps and ball deflector. I rebuilt the flippers. Then I replaced all of the bulbs and put her back together. The cabinet was in pretty good shape. The head decals were in pretty bad shape. I bought new head decals and new red t-molding and the head looks like new. I also checked the computer and cleaned it out. All-in-all it ended up being a very nice machine.

My Thoughts on the Machine

I find it funny that most people who love Attack from Mars hate Revenge from Mars because they are basically twins from a playfield point of view. When you play AFM you have to imagine what’s going on based on the voice calls. When you play RFM you see what’s going on in pseudo 3D. I think a lot of pinball people hate video games because they did speed the demise of pinball. I think the game is a blast. It’s the funniest pin I own next to Family Guy. The game modes are great. The graphics (video) add so much to the game play and really make it a much more immersive experience. I’ve thought about selling this machine a few times based on people offering to buy it. I think I would really miss the machine if I did sell it and would probably end up buying another one a few months later.
